The Gold Coast light rail corridor is getting closer to being operational with testing due to commence during October. The 14 trams are all electric, can comfortably carry 309 passengers, are air conditioned, have access for prams, wheel chairs and even surf boards. The trams have been built in Germany and will each carry the Gold Coast signature blue and gold colours.
The new rail system is not expected to be up and running until mid 2014 but should prove popular with the route connecting the new Gold Coast university hospital and Griffith University to the retail and beach side centres of Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. With 16 stations on the route (one at Main Beach) and 13 klms of track it is bound to assist with traffic congestion once fully operational.
